Don't Be a Fool

Romans 1:18-22
Romans 1:22-23 "Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things."
A fool is someone who trades something that is better for something that is worse. We see this theme all over the Bible. In Proverbs 7, we see a fool who traded obedience of God for the pursuit of adultery. In Jesus' parables, we see a fool who traded the firm foundation of the rock for a faulty foundation of sand. A fool is one who trades what is good for something that is bad.
In this text in Romans, we see the same thing. We see a fool (though "claiming to be wise") exchange the immortal glory of God for the mortal glory of things. They follishly chose to worship the created instead of the Creator (Romans 1:25). What about us? If we are truly saved, we are wise men who build our house upon the rock. However, that does not meean that we our perfect. In our sin and flesh, we often are fools who choose to trade something of God for something less than God. Oftentimes we trade the promises of God for the pursuit of our own pleasures. Oftentimes we trade obedience to God for sin.
So, don't be a fool, but rather hold on to the things of God, and do not trade them for lesser pleasures.
P.S. Sorry for the late devotional post this morning. I didn't have time to write it before church as I decided to sleep in after someone pulled the fire alarm at 1:00am...
