"The beginning of wisdom is this: get wisdom." Proverbs 4:7a

What is the beginning of wisdom? The Bible tells us short and simple that the beginning of wisdom is to get wisdom. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense, because we cannot live out wisdom unless we have wisdom. But the question that remains is this: how do we get wisdom? There are certainly many ways, but this morning I would like to suggest three ways in which we can get wisdom.

Firstly, in order to get wisdom we must read the Bible. This is the most important way to get wisdom, and one we must not neglect. Through reading scripture, we understand the ways, mind, and heart of God in order that we may live out his will for our lives. For how will we ever get wisdom apart from knowing God, and how will we ever know God apart from his Word? Surely we ought to read our Bibles for wisdom.

Secondly, in order to get wisdom we must seek it from those above us. All throughout scripture, we see an accent on multi-generational ministry. Even in the book of Proverbs, we see a father giving his son wisdom in order that his son might grow, and we ought to do the same. As we seek wisdom, we must look to those who are older and more mature than us that we might gain from their spiritual journey.

Thirdly, in order to get wisdom we must observe God's creation. Psalm 19 tells us that the heavens declare the glory of God. In creation, we see who God is, and therefore who we ought to be. Although we must always guide our observation of creation through the lens of scripture, we must not neglect our everyday experiences and how they can teach us. We can certainly gain rich wisdom from observing the beauty of nature, the relationships he has given us, the emotions and passions that he has given us, and much, much more.

So, how are you doing with getting wisdom? I encouage you to do so, so that you might live out wisdom, and so be blessed. Amen.
