Romans 5:6-8.. "For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
John 15:13.. "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
For surely the depths of God's love are too deep to fathom, yet within the words of Romans 5 we see a deeper portrayal of love than could ever be known to makind apart from Christ. The depths of God's love are this: that he died for sinners. There is no greater love that someone lay his life down for his brother, yet Christ not only laid down his life for his brother--he laid is down for his enemy. "While we were still weak...while we were stuill sinners, Christ died for us." If a man were to lay down his life in order to save another man, that would be the greatest love that he could possibly give (John 15:13). Yet the Lord Jesus Christ has given more love than this, since he not only died for his brother, but also his enemy. He died for the elect because he loved them; he died for sinners that they might be saved; he died for the unrighteous that they might become the rightoeusness of Christ. For surely this love we will never be able to comprehend.
"The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell.
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell."
"Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky."
-- The Love of God, Verses 1 and 4
The depth of God's love is deeper than we could ever comprehend--do not forget that. You never do not have a reason to rejoice--for Christ's blood has been poured out for sinners. He endured the wrath that we deserved and died the death that we deserved. Oh! How we ought to forever dwell in the depths of God's love.
