Romans 8:31.. "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

We must remember the context of the section of scripture before us today. Romans 8:31-39 occurs after all of the wonderful doctrine of the first eight chapters that have have been looking as for over the past two months. Specifically, this text comes after Romans 8:1-Romans 8:30, where Paul is speaking of our sanctification by the Spirit (Romans 8:1-8:17), and how God works everything for the good of this sanctification (Romans 8:28-29). In response to all of these truths, Paul asks the following question: "What then shall we say to these things?" Answer: We. Are. Untouchable.

Firslty, we are untouchable because no one can be against us. We find this in the first two verses of this text. Ultimately, if God is for us, who can be against us? The implied answer is "no one." Why? Because God has already given us his son, and he therefore will give us "all things" (Romans 8:32), and if the most powerful one in the universe says that he is both for you and able to give you all things, who can be against you? If the one who is fully soveriegn has both the ability and the will to work for your good, what can stand against you? Answer: nothing. We are untouchable.

Secondly, we are untouchable because no one can condemn us. We find this in verses 33 through 34. "Who can bring charge against God's elect?...Who is to condemn?" is the question, and "Christ Jesus...who indeed is interceding for us" is the answer. Satan brings his attacks and accusations, but each and every one of them are mirrored back to him by the wounds in Christ's hands. Satan tries to condemn, but he cannot. This world tries to condemn, but it cannot. Our enemies try to condemn, but they cannot. Why? Because every accusation brought against us was coverred by the blood of Christ, and the the righteous judge, God the Father, accepts the Son's blood as worthy to cover it all. We are untouchable.

Thirdly, we are untouchable because no one can seperate us from Christ's love. We are bound to Cbrist's love, for it is within us. And anything that is within us cannot be seperated from us, because it is part of us. The only one who has the power to seperate us from Christ's love is Christ himself, but he has promised that he will "never leave us nor forsake us" (Hebrews 13:5-6). Nothing--not tribulations, nor distress, nor persecution, nor famine, nor nakedness, nor danger, nor sword, nor death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation--can seperate us from God's love. We are untouchable.

The above truth speaks encouragement into every circumstance. For the true Christian, there is no fear of opposition, condemnation, or seperation. These are the great truths that we can cling to in order to persevere in the Christian life. Is this walk rough? Yes. Is life hard? Yes. Will we be defeated? Never. We are untouchable. The world may rise against itself, the mountains may crumble, the seas may quake, but nothing can touch those whom are saved in Christ Jesus.

"And his love is good, he is always kind. With a cross he proved that he is on our side.

We are the sons, we are the daughters of God. No matter where we go we're close to the Father's heart. And though we stumble, he will not let us fall. We are the Lord's and he will never forsake his own. We are the sons, we are the daughers of God.

When the lies speak louder than the truth, remind me that I belong to you. When I can't see past the dark of night, remind me you're always on my side."
